Sunday, 13 July 2008 - 'the idea of north'

Idea of North

Tickets: available at the gate from midday, 13 Jul, at only $26

"A cappella is sometimes thought of as being minimalist, but when you can sing
and entertain like The Idea of North, a band would just get in the way…”
- James Morrison

Event play list ...

some of the fabulous music to be experienced on the day.

Jorge Ben’s Mas Que Nada was made famous by Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66. Andrew Piper’s award-winning arrangement was recently used in an HSC music exam! Another of Andrew’s arrangements is Roy Orbison’s classic Blue Bayou - with a twist!

Don’t Wait Too Long is one of the groups newest arrangements penned by Naomi Crellin. Originally written by Madeline Peyroux this is type of swing tune that makes you just want to put your feet up and smile!

Revelation is from the group’s album The Gospel Project. This piece was first performed by the jazz band the Yellowjackets, who later collaborated with vocal group Take 6 in a version that has become a very popular one.

Featured on their first ever live in concert DVD, “Live at the Powerhouse” Nick Begbie performs the solo on this sensitive a cappella arrangement of Stings timeless classic, “Fields of Gold”. Also featured for the first time on the DVD is the interesting re-working of the Beatles classic Eleanor Rigby.

Thou Shalt is a beautiful meditative song written by Naomi and set to words that were inspired from sacred Aboriginal beliefs.

One of the many styles of music the group enjoys performing is Latin Jazz. Here the song No More Blues, originally written by Antonio Carlos Jobim, is freshly delivered into the a cappella setting.

The Unfortunate Tale of a Country Chicken - a story that perhaps has not been told before; apparently it happened around the time of Noah’s Ark!

Jackie was originally a jazz instrumental piece by saxophonist Jackie McLean. Annie Ross of vocal group Lamert, Hendricks and Ross wrote what is known as a vocalise to this piece; a vocalise is where an existing improvised instrumental solo is sung with syllables or words. Listen carefully as the words go by very quickly!

Aretha Franklin, the queen of soul is celebrated here in the performance of one of her famous songs, Since You’ve Been Gone.

Our charity - Fresh Hope ...

All proceeds are in support of our charity of choice ‘Fresh Hope’ - www.freshhope.org. The Fresh Hope Program is designed for mothers and their children who have become dependent on the use of drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism in response to crises in their lives. Fresh Hope is a live in drug rehabilitation home and the only home in Queensland that provides a safe haven for mothers and their children during the rehabilitation process.

Our favoured group ...

The Idea of North is regarded as a world class musical act. This has been recognised in major awards for performance and in recording successes over many years.  To hear and see this group in live performance is an unforgettable experience.  Their superb musicianship and outstanding arrangements embracing jazz, soul and gospel music, together with an amazing variety of  their own award-winning originals, traditional and contemporary songs, have marked them as an act not to be missed.  The group has appeared on stage with some of Australia’s greatest jazz musicians, including James Morrison and Don Burrows, and in concert and festivals alongside international artists such as The New York Voices, The Flying Pickets and have performed two concerts with Europe’s jazz a cappella super-group, The Real Group.
